Silicone Rendering Sunderland

Silicone render is the finish behind most of the “modern coloured render” houses you’ll see around newer Sunderland estates and on refurbished semis. The colour runs through the material, so it isn’t painted on afterwards.

What it actually offers

Applied as part of a correctly specified system, silicone finishes give a clean coloured surface with good water repellency and useful vapour permeability — meaning they shed rain while still allowing the wall to breathe to a degree.

That combination is why they’ve become the default on many exterior projects. It doesn’t make them a cure for everything, and the base coat and preparation underneath still do the structural work.

Where it suits

Sound masonry, suitably prepared existing render, and properties where a low-maintenance coloured finish is the goal. It works equally on a whole house or a single elevation.

It’s less appropriate as a cosmetic cover over failing render, unresolved moisture, or an old finish that has lost its bond.

Texture, colour and how it ages

Finishes come in different grain sizes, which changes the character of the wall more than people expect. Colour choice affects how it weathers: sheltered north-facing walls and areas under leaking gutters will always be the first places to show growth or staining.

It can be cleaned, and systems can generally be recoated in future. Nothing on the outside of a house is permanent.

Weather during application

Silicone systems are weather-sensitive while going on and curing. Rain, frost, cold and very rapid drying all matter, and each manufacturer sets its own conditions.

Exterior work can sometimes move with the weather. That’s not a delay tactic — it’s the difference between a finish that looks right in five years and one that doesn’t.
