Pebble Dash & Roughcast Sunderland

Pebble dash and roughcast are all over Sunderland’s post-war housing, and they divide opinion. Some homeowners want theirs repaired and left alone; plenty want a smoother, more modern exterior. Both are reasonable, and the route depends on what condition the existing finish is in.

Repairing what’s there

Missing patches, damage at low level, areas that have come away around downpipes and sections lost during window replacement can usually be repaired. Matching the stone size and the way it was originally thrown makes the difference between a discreet repair and an obvious one.

On a painted roughcast wall, repairing and then repainting the elevation is often the cleanest-looking, most cost-effective option.

Can it be rendered over?

Sometimes. Whether roughcast can be covered or needs removing depends on its condition and on the system proposed. Where it’s firmly bonded and reasonably even, a suitable build-up can sometimes go over it — sometimes with a levelling coat first.

Where it sounds hollow across large areas, is loose, or has been patched in several different materials over the years, removal is usually the more sensible starting point. There’s no universal answer here, and anyone giving you one over the phone is guessing.

Removal

Taking roughcast off is heavy, dusty work, and what’s revealed underneath isn’t always tidy — old brickwork, previous repairs and cement scratch coats are all possible. The wall then needs preparing before a new finish.

It’s worth planning for that uncertainty rather than pretending the wall behind will be perfect.

Updating the look

Most people going down this route end up with a through-coloured silicone or monocouche finish, which reads as a much more modern house from the street.

If your property is older or sits within one of Sunderland’s conservation areas, it can be worth checking any local restrictions before settling on a finish — particularly where the change to the exterior appearance is significant.
